At two years old and learning to say his colours, when we pointed to something yellow, our son would adorably say “lellow.”
But when we pointed to other things, no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t get “green” or “blue” or “red.”
All we ever got was “not lellow.”
From his worldly toddler point of view, yellow was paramount, the only colour that mattered.
That was his perspective.
Let’s say I were to hand you a chocolate glazed donut, you might:
a) smile and say thank you – you love donuts
b) frown and push it away – you only eat organic
c) inhale it in a second – you haven’t eaten all day
d) stare blankly – you’re tempted but cutting back on sugar
How we respond to the same situation depends on where we’re coming from. Where we’re coming from depends on our state of mind.
