The Reason Your Neck & Shoulders Never Relax

Most people spend years treating the symptom – and never find the source.
Last week, we talked about 5 reasons why aligning through the spine matters so much for how we feel – physically, which ripples out into how we feel mentally, emotionally, and energetically.
This week, I want to share something that shifted the way I understand the body entirely.
The spine, in its natural alignment, has a beautiful 'S' curvature – a gentle curve through the lower back that gradually transitions into a smaller curve in the opposite direction higher up. It's elegant. Purposeful.
And the spinal cord itself? It has a surprising solidity to it – more like a dog's tail than the fragile, delicate thing most people imagine.
Here's why this matters for you:
When the spine holds that gradual 'S' shape, it becomes a pillar – strong enough for your head to simply rest right on top of it. No effort.
But when that alignment is lost, the pillar can no longer do its job.
And the body, being the brilliant adaptor that it is, calls in reinforcements.
The small muscles of the neck and shoulders step in to carry the weight of the head.
The trouble is – that’s not their job.
These muscles are designed for movement: turning your head up, down, side to side.
They're not built to bear the load of one of the heaviest parts of your body, day after day, hour after hour.
Hold that contrast for a minute.
The quiet strength of a perfectly aligned spinal pillar… versus a small band of muscles in your neck and shoulders working overtime, every single day, to hold your head up.
